Do I buy a second monitor to connect to an imac 27" 2017 or do I use it as a monitor for a new imac?

I need a second monitor to help with working from home. Do I buy a new monitor to work with my iMac 27" 2017 or do I upgrade my iMac to a newer model and use the 2017 as the second monitor

That would be like suggesting what make, model and color Sports Car you should buy.

You can use most any modern display with DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort or USB/C inputs with you iMac. 27” Displays can range in price from $200 to a $1000, so it is a good idea to first consider your budget and then do some diligent searching.
