Secure connection in Safari on ipad 2 with ios 4.3.3.

I don't seem to be able to connect to certain websites in Safari, which I am pretty sure are secure, www.nytimes.com

Error message says ' Safari cannot open the page because it could not establish a secure connection to the server.'

At the same time, I can connect to other sites, such as google.com

I have following some suggestion such as changing the DNS to 8.8.8.8, resetting or clearing safari cache and cookies. Without luck.

I am considering updating to iOS 9.3.5. and then downgrading to iOS 6. But I am reluctant since this may cause performance issues. And I don't know if a new version of iOS/Safari may resolve this issue.

Is there anything else I can try on iOS 4.3.3?

You cannot "downgrade" on an iPad.

I am not sure, but my guess would be that it is your completely outdated and no longer support Safari version - I just tried the link you provided and had absolutely no problem.

No.

Because of how old your iOS version is.

And this 9-year old iPad 2 will be obsolete soon.

Even if you upgrade to iOS 9.3.5 ( you will NOT be able to downgrade back to iOS 6 ) there are some supported third party Web browsers left, but there are no longer an support for any other older, popular, third party apps, any longer.

Many, MANY third party app developers are permanently removing ALL of their older iOS versions of their apps from Apple's iOS App Store servers and this practice has only been getting worse since the beginning of 2020.

I do not know what you use that 9-year old iPad running such an old iOS for, but basically this iPad will be useless for anything, but some Internet Web browsing use.

Sorry, but this is the reality in the year 2020.

These old iPad 2, 3, 4 and 1st gen iPad Mini models are nearing 8 and 9-years old, now.

As of the beginning of 2019, many, MANY third party app developers are all more quickly and completely permanently dropping older app support for all old 7, 8 and 9-year iPads that are running 2-3 year old and earlier iOS versions ( iOS 10 and earlier ).

Third party app developers are removing all of their older, legacy versions of their apps from Apple's App Store servers, now.

Third party app developers no longer want to support these 8 and 9-year old or older iOS devices, any longer!

Older versions of apps are, soon, going to be gone for good, now!

Getting older versions of apps for these old iPad models, initially from Apple’s iOS App Store is getting very difficult and very problematic and this issue is getting, painfully, much worse in 2020, now!

These old iPads are now reaching their complete end of life and support.

So finding older versions apps for older iPads, while still possible, currently, will be a tough challenge, now, in 2020.

Old iPads that can no longer be upgraded/updated will have NO MORE APPS AVAILABLE for initial download, at all, soon, from the Apple iOS App Store, for such old iOS devices in the very near future.

Older versions of apps for these older iPads will be completely gone, at some point, in the very foreseeable future.

Again, it is what it is, today, in the year 2020!

So, this is really now the time to seriously consider a new or discounted, refurbished iPad from Apple or other Apple authorised resellers.

Apple supports new iPad models for up to 5-6 years with third party app developers supporting these iPads for another 2-3 years after.

So, that is a total of between 7-9 years of iPad/iOS support!

Older iPad models, like the iPad 2, 3, 4 and 1st gen iPad Mini have ALL reached this support limit!

If you need an iPad that can run the latest and greatest versions of iOS, as well as, the most current apps available, then, you need to purchase a new iPad from Apple or a discounted, refurbished iPad from Apple’s Refurbished & Clearance section of Apple’s Website or a new or refurbished iPad from an Apple authorised, third party retail or online reseller OR other trusted sources for new or used Apple products.

A lot has happened with iPad and iOS in 7-9 years and in the past years since iOS 4.

As an example and compared to your 9-year old iPad model,

The cheapest, baseline 2019, 10.2 inch screen 7th gen Apple iPads have a 1/2 inch larger retina screen, newer, more powerful and nearly 2-1/2 times faster 2.3 Ghz, A10 Fusion processors, AT LEAST, 3-4 times the internal RAM, with the 2019, 7th gen iPad having 3 GBs of internal RAM, iPadOS 13 support, with much better and improved multitasking features, Apple Pencil and Apple Smart keyboard cover support and have better audio speakers and better/improved built-in cameras.

In addition, if you search online and look at various, reputable online Apple device resellers, you can usually find this 2019, 7th gen iPad at discounts of between $60 U.S.D and $100 U.S.D. depending on storage size and whether it is a WiFi ONLY model or a WiFi/cellular data model.

No.

Downgrading is not supported by Apple and not possible.

Once you upgrade that iPad 2 to iOS 9.3.5, it is done.

There is no going back to a previous iOS version.

AND, like I thoroughly stated, whatever apps you have on that iPad, I am not even certain at this time that any of those older iOS 4 apps can be upgraded, any longer, as there maybe no longer any “newer” iOS 9 and earlier version of apps that will be there in the iOS App Store for the app to upgrade to.

So, some of your installed apps may still work, while others, may not and will have no way, any longer, of getting an app update to fix a crash issue or some other unforeseen app issue.

You simply waited waaaay too long to decide that it maybe time to upgrade the operating system of that iPad!

That iPad 2 probably shipped originally with iOS 4.3.3!

Do yourself a kindness and forget about this old iPad 2 now and get yourself something that is much newer, IF you cannot afford a brand new iPad.

A 2013 iPad Air 1 or iPad Mini 2 or 3 can run a maximum of iOS 12.4.6, currently.

An iPad Air 2 or iPad Mini 4 OR an iPad 5th or 6th generation can run the latest iPadOS 13.4.1 version!

If you purchase something cheaper used, whoever you purchase from, make absolutely sure the device is NOT user activation locked!

If necessary, ask for a series photos/images and/or short video of the iPad’s “Hello, Welcome to iPad screen animations as this means that iPad has been reset for sale and doesn't boot up to any lock or home screen.

Your over 9-year old iPad 2 with no up to date iOS version installed is a problematic “time bomb”, now!

Sorry, it is what it is now!

Best of Luck to You!
