My left command key has stopped working but the right is fine. I especially need to use command + c, v, and x. For some reason command + a does work as well as all the shortcut functions for the right command key. I am using macOS Sierra 10.12.6 and did update it last week - to be honest cant be entirely sure if this has happened since then or not.

I understand the left Command key is not working properly on your computer running macOS Sierra 10.12.6. Which model do you have?
Try resetting the NVRAM and SMC and starting your Mac in safe mode to initially troubleshoot this issue:
How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac
Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac
Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac
Are you able to connect a wired or Bluetooth keyboard to your Mac to test the Command key?
If your Apple keyboard doesn't work
If the issue persists, contact Apple Support to get the keyboard repaired.
