Target Display Mode - Thunderbolt 3 HP ZBook

I have a late 2012 iMac and a HP Zbook with thunderbolt 3. I want to use the iMac in target display mode. I bought an official Thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adapter and an official thunderbolt 2 cable. All software is up to date. But I can’t get the iMac into target display mode using the Cmd-f2 button press.

Any advice?

Target Display Mode is only supported on machines running High Sierra or earlier. It is not supported on Catalina or Mojave at all.

It also will not work if you're attempting to use it as a display for a non Apple computer.
