Trouble upgrading from Mojave to Catalina

Hi. I'm on a 2019 Macbook Air. I'm running Mojave 10.14.6. I'm trying to upgrade to Catalina. When I go to my system preferences and select software update, it tells me that my computer is up to date. I searched this forum for similar questions and found an answer that gave me a link which allowed me to download Catalina 10.15.1. I downloaded that package but when I tried to open it, I received a message that said I needed to have Catalina 10.15 installed already. Can anyone help?

Catalina isn't an "update" for Mojave or any previous OS. It is an "upgrade" which just means it is a new OS.

You have to go to the App Store and download the Catalina installer from there.

Just search for "Catalina" in the App Store.

What you downloaded was an update to Catalina, not the Catalina installer.
