Finger ID and Face ID

Hi everyone, does anyone know if there will be an option for finger ID on the newer iPhones instead of face? I'm looking at a phone that doesn't have the Face ID so wonder if there will soon be an option to set up finger ID instead so it's better protected.

Thanks.

There isn’t anything unofficial, either because the iPhone X and later do not have the hardware to scan a fingerprint. Apparently you bought a phone that was not refurbished by Apple, because if it had been FaceID would work. It must have also been refurbished with counterfeit or scavenged parts, because Apple does not sell parts to non-approved refurbishers.

Latest iOS version has this protection

iOS 13.5

iOS 13.5 speeds up access to the passcode field on devices with Face ID when you are wearing a face mask and introduces the Exposure Notification API to support COVID-19 contact tracing apps from public health authorities. This update also introduces an option to control automatic prominence of video tiles on Group FaceTime calls and includes bug fixes and other improvements.

Face ID and Passcode

  • Simplified unlock process for devices with Face ID when you are wearing a face mask
  • Passcode field automatically presented after swiping up from the bottom of the Lock screen when you are wearing a face mask
  • Also works when authenticating with the App Store, Apple Books, Apple Pay, iTunes, and other apps that support signing in with Face ID

TouchID was introduced on the iPhone 5s. It was discontinued with the iPhone X which introduced FaceID. So if your device doesn’t have FaceID nor touchID then it must be an iPhone 5c or older. Those older devices lack the hardware for any biometrics and can only use a passcode that must be entered every time you want to unlock the display.

How is FaceID disabled? Who disabled it?

Every iPhone since the iPhone X does not support touchID. They don’t have the hardware for it. They only support FaceID. The new iPhone SE uses touchID though. But the X, XS, 11 and so forth do not have the fingerprint scanner for touchID as they support FaceID.

So if you want a new device and want touchID, then the new SE is your only option.

Devices that support FaceID cannot support touchID and vice versa. They don’t have the hardware for the alternate biometric technology.

An iPhone XS that doesn’t have a working FaceID camera seems to me to be an actually broken iPhone XS. The whole point of refurbishment is to return a device to fully functional, like new condition.

It sounds to me you got scammed on a broken used device, not a truly refurbished one. All iPhone XS models originally shipped with working FaceID. And all Apple OEM refurbished iPhone XS devices have working FaceID.

Did you ask them why FaceID was not working on that device, and did they discount the price because of that?
