How do I get it to quite and restart.?....
iMac 21.5", macOS 10.13
1. Start up from macOS Recovery
To start up from macOS Recovery, turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold one of the following combinations on your keyboard. Command-R is generally recommended, especially if you never installed macOS Sierra 10.12.4 or later… https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904#notupdated
Command (⌘)-R
Install the latest macOS that was installed on your Mac.
Option-⌘-R
Upgrade to the latest macOS compatible with your Mac.
Shift-Option-⌘-R
Install the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available.
2. Decide whether to erase (format) your disk
If you need to erase your disk before installing macOS, select Disk Utility from the Utilities window, then click Continue. You probably don't need to erase, unless you're selling or giving away your Mac or have an issue that requires you to erase. Learn more about when and how to erase.
3. Install macOS
After starting up from macOS Recovery, follow these steps to install macOS:
If your Mac restarts to a setup assistant, but you're selling or giving it away, press Command-Q to quit the assistant without completing setup. Then click Shut Down. When the new owner starts up the Mac, they can use their own information to complete setup.
If you never installed macOS Sierra 10.12.4
If macOS Sierra 10.12.4 or later was never installed on your Mac, macOS Recovery works differently:
Be aware that if you are not running Catalina and opt to upgrade to it all of your 32 bit apps will not work. You can easily tell which they are by downloading and running the free GO64 app.
If you're already running Catalina this post will self destruct in 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4…
Turning power off was no help. My problem still exists. As I was downing an update from Apple,
about 1/2 way into the download, the hard drive froze. When l tried to reboot, the computer Would start to reload and then turn off. Help!!!!
I’m afraid some are missing my problem....Here it is again: I was attempting to download an app that Apple sent out as an upgrade. While in the down loading the hard drive seated up. All I can get now is the Apple logo and the bar under it. It will load about 1/2 and then shuts off. Every time I restart using the power button, the unit does the same thing. I can go no where else.
While holding down the Command + R keys press the power button and see if you can get into the Recovery mode. You might need to have a wired keyboard to do that. If you have a curren B/T keyboard from Apple you can use the charging cable to connect it as a wired keyboard.
Once in the Recover volume repair the disk with Disk Utility and reinstall the system.
My computer also froze. I turned it off by holding down power button and I turned it back on all is see is white progress bar that seem stuck
It's been that way for 2 days
Boot into Recovery volume and repair the disk. Reboot normally. If you can't reboot again into the Recovery volume and reinstall the system.
Have you run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up" or anti-virus apps on your Mac?
William Gray2 has the same problem as I do. If I could reboot it would solve my problem.
However, since I cannot reboot all I see is Apple logo and the progress bar and moves until it reaches the 1/2 way point, then it turns off. If I push the power button, it start all over.
First try a Safe Mode boot. If you can't then boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down) and run Disk Utility to repair the drive and reboot.
If it still won't boot normally do another Recovery volume boot and re-install the system.
Hold power button in until it turns off.
How's it going?
