Time Machine couldn't complete back up

I have not been able to complete a back up for a couple of weeks now. Keep getting this message...

'Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it is read-only. You may need to repair or erase the disk using Disk Utility. If the disk can’t be repaired, select a different disk for backups.'

I have been using the My Passport for 2 years and haven't had a problem. There is space so unsure why its not backing up.

Thanks

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

Drives can fail at anytime.

Time Machine has completed ... a new backup for you, or get a message saying it can't create the backup.

That message reappears it is likely the TM disk has been operating in a state of failure, and will continue to reappear with increasing frequency.

The solution is to replace it.
