Hi, I recently broke my MacBook Pro 2017 screen and I’ve been trying to connect an external display via HDMI so I can still use the MacBook just bypassing the broken screen. However, when I’m connecting the HDMI via a usb C adapter it isn’t connecting up. Is there any way I can connect it up without having to see what I’m doing on screen?

Once you have logged in, F1 or command F1 should toggle mirroring for the displays. But if you do not auto-login, that typically means typing the first letter of the User-id, then typing the associated password, all "blind".
If you get it all correct, you are in with a mirrored display and can change things to your liking from there.
To change the external display to "primary"drag the tiny Icon of the Menubar to the external display.
