Ensure that you have macOS Catalina installed on your MacBook Air.

Connect your iPhone physically to your MacBook Air using the appropriate cable. Find your iPhone in the finder and click on it. In the right column place a CHECK mark in Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi check box.

See whether that shows your iPhone in Finder when both of the devices are connected using the same WiFi Network.
