Can I use iMac (27 inch late 2009) as second monitor for MacBook Pro (Retina, 13 inch Early 2015)?

I have Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable and I tried cmd + F2 but it's not working. Do I need different cable or my MacBook Pro doesn't have function for second monitor?

Target display mode requires macOS High Sierra or earlier on the iMac used as the external display. It does not work with macOS Mojave or later.


It also requires exactly the correct iMac, matched with exactly the correct cable, as noted in this article:
