Macbook Air - Shutting Down

About half the time I shut down my macbook air, it doesn't shut down and I have to force it to by holding down the power button . I can't figure out why it's happening some of the time and not others. Any idea/suggestions?

First make sure your MacOS is up to date. Make sure to quit all apps before shutting down, force quit any apps that are being stubborn and won't quit properly How to force an app to quit on your Mac - Apple Support

Try booting into safe mode then rebooting normally How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Try resetting the SMC How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support and NVRAM Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
