[iPad 1] Prompting for recovery key - no option to create one

Was gifted vintage iPad 1. Created a brand new Apple ID (via web), which immediately enrolled in two-factor authentication (both email and phone). Got those all set up and working.

Signing into the iPad iCloud, its prompting for a recovery key. Already read

In apple id, under Security, there is no option to Replace Lost Key as described. Exactly like this same user 2 years ago - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8647269

Can't disable two factor auth. Don't have a trusted device. Do have my password and two factor sources.

How can I get this old iPad connected?

I am confused. Your Apple ID can't use both 2 Step Verification and 2 Factor Authentication at the same time. It's either or.

If you are using 2SV and have lost your password, trusted device and recovery key, you are locked out of that account forever. 2SV accounts are not recoverable.

The iOS on that iPad is too old to use 2FA as is, You just enter your password and 6 digit verification code in one step.

@michael

Agreed, yes this is quite confusing, as I'm attempting to use a legacy device which no longer has current documentation for how the authentication systems are implemented today.

The AppleID was created today. It has "two factor authentication" enabled by default.

There are no trusted devices registered.

The iPad is asking for a "recovery key" after attempting an iCloud login. Clearly in the attached screenshot below, there are no recovery keys nor the option to recover/create one present.

@Eric,

Not seeing anything in that 2015 article which applies to the scenario today.

two factor authentication, is whats enabled for the account.

Hmm, well not sure what to say about the UI experience on the ipad. factory reset it. skipped through all the setup wizard prompts and connected to wifi. Settings -> icloud, typed in appleid and password. next prompt screen was asking for a recovery key. no verification code was sent to the SMS or email.
