excel not rendering correctly when opening a file

When I open an excel file, the data is upside down, and empty cells to not align with occupied cells. IF I "grab" the sheet and move the sheet up and to the left, where all data is now not visible, and then bring the sheet to home, the data and cells typically show right side up and everything is aligned. This does not work if the sheet has frozen panes. I then have to un-freeze to do this work around, and many times there are still sections of the worksheet that do not render correctly.
