Click on your Desktop, and then choose Finder Preferences : General : Show these items on the Desktop, and click at least the top three items. Then see if your thumb drive appears mounted on the Desktop.

In addition to the previous tip, if you want the device to show up in the Sidebar, go to Finder>Preferences...>Sidebar, and make the appropriate selection.
