iPad asking for Passcode after update

This is the same issue I've seen on several threads, which Apple seems to have closed so the only way I can add my voice is to open a new one.

My mum's iPad updated iOS overnight and is now asking for a passcode. She's never set one, so can't get past the passcode screen. We've tried 1234 and 123456 that some people have suggested in the threads, but that hasn't worked. There's not much point in trying random combinations as we'll end up just having to wipe the device.

Has anyone come up with a definitive solution to this problem?

Please note this is NOT A CASE OF SETTING UP A PASSCODE AND FORGETTING WHAT IT IS. There are thousands of people who've said on this discussion board they have the same problem: to be clear, a passcode has never been set up or used, but after an OS update the iPad is now asking for one.

Did your mom use Face ID or Touch ID on her iPad? If she did, she HAD a passcode. You cannot set up Face ID or Touch ID without setting up a passcode first. There are no exceptions to that and this is almost universally the issue you are referring to. People set up their iPad's, set up Touch or Face ID and forget they were required to use a passcode. They don't write that code down, forget it, and then get into this situation.

Regardless, you question asks if there is a definitive solution to this? Yes, the device must be erased using a computer with iTunes or for a Mac, Finder. If your mom has been backing up her iPad to iCloud, she'll be able to restore the device from the backup after getting back in the device. If she hasn't, her data is gone.
