MacBook Pro keeps on getting stuck

Hello all,

I'm having issues with my MBP mid 2012 since a couple of weeks, after the new Mojave update. I hope someone can help me out.

The OS gets randomly stuck, either by displaying the spinning wheel and/or completely freezing, and it hangs for several seconds. It is unusable.

At first, I thought it was Mojave's fault, so I upgraded to Catalina. Nothing changed.

I then decided to do a PRAM and SMC reset. Nada.

Last week I gave up and did a clean install (via internet) of Mojave. Nothing again, always the same issue. Upgrading again to Catalina didn't fix it either.

Using recovery mode, I checked my SSD for errors, thought it was hardware-related, but no errors showed up.

I'm running 10.15.5 on a clean install. Open to any suggestion, at this point.

SATA cable is a known point of failure or intermittent fault

Typically upgrading a HD to SSD it is highly recommende to change out the SATA cable in the mid 2012's.

Boot externally will bypass both the internal SSD and SATA cable — this might tell you something in diagnosing the issue.

Thanks for your reply!

Writing this from a clone on an external HD created via CCC. It runs smoothly, so that narrows the issue to the internal SSD (or the cable).

Any diagnostics I can run to narrow it down further or do you suggest to spend few bucks on the SATA cable?

You can pull that SSD and put int in an external enclosure, and that would be all the proof you need if it flies like the wind 😉

$14.99 is a cheap fix.

If you want to analysis the SSD you can run the https://binaryfruit.com/drivedx

then you will need to interpret the plethora of output, not for the light hearted.
