After updating to Catalina on my five year old Mac, my Office software (Word, Excel, and PP) no longer work. I'm being asked to subscribe to Office with an annual fee. What's going on? Am I simply out of luck and must I subscribe?
Your older Office will probably be a 32-bit version and that doesn't work on Catalina. You have a few choices:

Office 2011 and older are 32 bit and will not work with Catalina. You need to upgrade your Microsoft Office to Office 365 (subscription) or to Office 2019 (one time purchase).
