My iMac is on OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6 I'm trying to update it but no new updates are available, and I've changed the app store setting preference to install any new updates but no updates show up. How can I get the update for the newest version?

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which iMac model you have, download High Sierra or Catalina through the links provided. They're full-version upgrades and won't appear in the Updates list.
