Pencil won’t work

The pencil worked once on my new IPad Pro, now it won’t work. I have tried to charge it; can’t tell if it is charged. I have closed and reopened notes and Nebo. What else to do?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

You can enable the battery widget in the Today View on your iPad to see how much charge is left on the pencil and on your iPad.

Was the pencil left uncharged for any extended period of time? If the answer is yes, the teeny tiny battery in the pencils, if uncharged long enough, die and can't be brought back to life.
