Why can't I use iPhoto anymore? Are all my photos lost??

Once I updated to Catalina, there is a circle with a line through it over my iPhotos app. When I try to open it, i get the "iPhoto is not available on this version of Mac". I had a lot of photos still on there and I can't find them anywhere now. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it!

Thank you, all!

1. Because it depends on a 32-bit library. Catalina dropped support for 32-bit software.

2. No. Launch Photos with the Option key held down, click on Other Library, and choose the iPhoto one; unless you moved it, it'll be in the Pictures folder of your home folder.

iPhoto was discontinued 5 years ago. It is no longer developed or sold. It was replaced by the more powerful (and free) Photos.app that comes with the OS. You can migrate to that app very simply:

Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point at your iPhoto Library. It will do the rest.

If you prefer not to use Photos there are several 3rd party apps that you can use. Which to choose depends on the kind of photographer you are and your budget.
