wiping out my Mac

I have a Mac Book Pro and it isn't working correctly. I just want to completely wipe everything out and start fresh. How do I go about doing this?

Please follow the instructions found in How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support to accomplish the erase and the reinstall of macOS.

Wiping the drive before doing simple troubleshooting is like amputating your foot because your toenails are too long. A wipe/reinstall should be looked at a last resort. Often I believe even Apple phone techs are too quick in suggesting that. Have you done other troubleshooting before posting?


If not, we may be able to find that it is something simpler, but we need more information first.


1) What MacBook Pro sub-model? For "About this Mac..." and what OS version is it running?


2) What symptoms are you experiencing? Are issues limited to certain programs? CAn they be traced to the recent installation of any system or security updates.


If the computer is running, you can save us playing "20 Questions" with you by posting a system config snapshot. Fortunately there is a safe, secure way to do that. We can quickly and within the confines of these forums help you determine if software issues are the problem if you use EtreCheck, available free from the Mac App Store here:

Run it, select “Report" from the left-hand pane (scroll down to the bottom of that pane to find):



When its report displays, click the "Share Report" icon from EtreCheck’s toolbar and then "Copy report” from the resulting dropdown.



⚠️ Please DO NOT highlight the text in the report before using Etrecheck’s “Copy report” command—that will garble the formatting and make the report slower and harder to evaluate.
