speakers cut out using usb microphone

I would like to use a USB microphone for Zoom calls to get better sound quality. However as soon as I plug in a USB microphone (Samson go-mike), the sound cuts out. This happens whether I use the computer's internal speakers or headphones or external speakers plugged into the headphone socket. It happens on my 2016 iMac and my 2015 laptop. I've checked that the sound input and output are set correctly in System Preferences. Is there anything else I can do?
