I have just received 3 phone calls on our landline in the last half hour stating to contact apple support. How does Apple notify you when there is is a problem?

Those are scams. Apple doesn't make unsolicited phone calls. If there was a problem you would be notified when attempting to log in, including when logging into this forum. Also see: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204759
