Why doesn’t 5.1 audio content play when Dolby Atmos is turned on, to play 5.1 content one has to disengage Atmos feature on Apple TV, otherwise it’s played on PCM format.

5.1 contents don’t play when immersive audio is switched on, why ?

The Dolby Atmos format that Apple TV 4K outputs, is Dolby MAT 2.0 encoded as PCM Multichannel with Atmos metadata. When you change the output of the Apple TV to Dolby Digital 5.1, then Atmos is no longer available.

Apple TV 4K will not output as Dolby TrueHD with Atmos, or Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos.

When your source content has 5.1 audio, then you wouldn’t have to turn off Atmos. It should output the best available format (matched for source and output capability).
