Older iMac as second display with new iMac?

I have an older iMac (late 2009). Time to update to a new 2020 iMac. I know the new machine will support multiple monitors, but is there a way to use the older iMac as the secondary display?

iMac, OS X 10.11

If the 2009 iMac is 27" it should work, despite what Apple says.

Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support

"You can connect any of these older iMac models to another Mac from 2019 or earlier"

You will need a USB-C to Mini DisplayPort cable. Thunderbolt adapters and cables won't work.
