compatibility of external storage drives with older desktop iMac (2011)

I have an iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), Processor 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, Memory 16 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3 and would like to purchase an external storage drive, either disc drive or solid state. I have $200 to spend.

May someone please inform me of what my best options are, and whether I should go to the uptown store and talked to a mac staffer?

Thank you in advance,

Sincerely,

Jak Sweeney L.

For about $250 you can get a 6TB unit that should last many years.
