The adapter would not have damaged anything inside. If you haven't, reboot your Mac. You can also try an SMC reset.

3rd reply.
So a few minutes ago i said that i have no sound after using the HDMI adapter.
I decided to make sure it wasn't my actual sound card (do macbook pro's have sound cards? I seem to recall it's something different)
And, lo and behold, that same message of no output/input devices found appears even without hte hdmi plugged in.
I used my sound on Tuesday. Traveled all day yesterday. Powered it up just now.
Did the adapter destroy something inside? is that possible?
HELP!
Thank you!
If no output device detected, one likely cause is a stuck headphone jack (it thinks there is still a device plugged in, but it does not present the proper electrical load, because it is not actually plugged in.)
Try inserting and removing the headphone plug in the jack a dozen times or more.
A USB-C to HDMI adapter. They are readily available on Amazon, Best Buy, etc.
Thank you!
so i got the adapter from amazon. it is plugged in now. HOWEVER, i have no sound. The message in preferences says, NO OUTPUT (or input) DEVICES FOUND
What do I need?
thanks for your help!
re boot.! of course! it worked.
I'm just not very tech savvy. I only know how to use technology when it works. LOL
hank you sooooooooooo much!
Glad that sorted it. Incidentally, you will usually have to select HDMI as your sound output in System Preferences if you want the TV to provide both video and audio.
