My Apple TV remote volume controls won’t work on my tv anymore.

Note that the Apple Remote controls the volume by signaling the TV (or receiver) directly. Which may mean that you have to point the remote in a slightly different direction to the IR receptor on the TV (or receiver), unobstructed for line-of-sight.
