I have a few thousand photos taken from a very old Mac and now in the cloud under an old Apple ID. I would like to transfer them to a new Apple ID so that I can stop using the old Apple ID.
Any advice on how to do this would be much appreciated.

You can go to iCloud.com/Photos using a computer browser and download them to a new computer/device from there.
You can create a iCloud Shared Photo Library and from there copy them to a new device/computer.
