Macbook pro 2012 will not connect via ethernet to router.

Hi I am trying to get my macbook pro 2012 to connect to me router via ethernet. The router shows it is connected at 1Gb/sec but when I then use the connections menu to establish internet connection it is showing as not connected. I am running OS 10.15.6

Be certain you have "Set service order" to place Ethernet at the TOP of the list of interfaces. The TopMost, Working interface is the one used for connection to the Internet.

When the Ethernet cable is not plugged in, Ethernet will not be working, so Wi-Fi (next on the list) will be used automatically.
