Scam: Hackers from China/Russia download TeamViewer Quick Support...

I've received a call that my iCloud had been hacked by individuals in China and Russia. The person claimed to work for Apple. How can I verify this? Had me type James Lee into the support search from Apple but anyone could have done that to "prove" that is a person that works at Apple, not the man who called me.

Wanted me to download TeamViewer Quick Support and then start going through it with him. I told him I'd call back if I verified this was a safe way to proceed.

Anyone else experience this? Anyway to verify the legitimacy or shall I continue to assume its a scam?

Thanks,

Toni

It is a scam. Apple doesn't make unsolicited phone calls. If there was a problem you would be notified when attempting to log in, including when logging into this forum. Also see: Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support

Also, the caller id number shown on scam and marketing calls is frequently not the number actually originating the call. The number is often spoofed.

One option to consider is Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers. See: Detect and block spam phone calls - Apple Support

In addition to FoxFifth's answers, Apple does not use TeamViewer for remote support. They have their own proprietary software which is for viewing but not controlling your system.
