iPhone battery life
I was taking all precautions to maximize my battery life yet in just a year it rapidly deteriorated to 85%.. is this normal ?

Possibly.
Batteries deteriorate based on charge cycles used and environment.
Both hot and cold environments will effect the battery.
Any precautions or rituals posted on the internet about maximizing battery health are useless.
I don't do anything and my battery is at 100% after about a year.
