Do Mac's Need Third Party Antivirus Software?

Hi, I have a 13 inch 2020 MacBook Pro and was wondering if Mac's require antivirus and anti malware software? I am a new Mac user who was previously using windows and now have switched to Mac. I have however installed Bitdefender for Mac, as a precaution until I find out the true answer, as some articles online are saying "Mac's don't require antivirus software" while some state that "They do", so I'm a little confused as which one to listen too.

I hope someone out there can give me the best, accurate answer.
