One way to better isolate the smaller cable and prevent damages, to that (which is hard-wired

into the adapter itself) would be to try and get the 'power adapter extension cable.'

That goes where the AC power plug-in 'duck-head' is; made

to accept optional accessory cable to replace this toggle head.

Some resellers have inventories of official Apple (power AC charger, etc)

plus other accessories and upgrade parts.

You may find more than one Official part (by number) that work correctly, sometimes

at fair discount through an authorized mac-centric reseller such as OWC, online.

The wire you have issue with, is not end-user replaceable.

Good luck & happy trails!🌻🐝

The portion of the 85 w cable the goes into the wall to the adapter is fine. The portion that connects from the adapter to the 15" Mac is fraying

The power adapter and cord are an integrated unit.

Can I buy just the charger portion that includes the connector to the Mac?

No.

For what it's worth those power adapters (including the cord) will last the life of your Mac if you handle it in accordance with Apple's instructions, here:

Using and maintaining your Apple MagSafe Adapter

Reducing cable strain on your MagSafe power adapter

OWC sells genuine Apple MagSafe power adapters for about $50.
