I have an iMac with OS X El Capitan 10.11.6. How do I update the OS?

I am trying to update the operating system, and it says none are available. But it is too old and I need to update.

iMac 21.5″, OS X 10.11

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which iMac model you have, download High Sierra or Catalina through the links provided. Catalina requires it to be a 2012 or newer one.
