iPhone is iOS 14.1, iMac is Mojave 10.14.6. I want to back up iPhone to an external hard drive. Alert saying I have to update iMac, but I don't want to go to Catalina. Any options? Thanks much.

Peter: Thanks for the quick response. Had me pretty excited! Took the windy road to find out that there were two minor updates to 10.14.6 that needed to be installed, and I installed them. Now, when I go to the updates window, the only option is Catalina.
When I hooked my iPhone to the iMac, got the same "A software update is required to connect to Dave's iPhone" alert.
Thoughts?
Peter: Yes, I've been to this link a few times, and it doesn't seem to be that helpful. It say what I said in the original post, that I have to update. But I don't want to update to Catalina, so it looks like there doesn't seem to be a solution. Thanks.
Peter: Right you are. Even though Apple Store told me there were no more updates that I needed, apparently there was one. It didn't take long to dl and install. iPhone's connected to iMac now, and I'm backing it up. Thanks much for pushing me in the right direction.
That invitation should not UPGRADE to Catalina. It should UPDATE Mojave with whatever is missing.
No need to upgrade to Catalina, just make sure you have installed all available updates to Mojave
