I am having difficulty using my aol email address with the email app. I am getting the emails ok...but unable to send out emails. Every time I do so ...I get the following message.

I couldn't add my aol account to the mail app it kept failing verification. I found this and it fixed all my problems. Maybe it will help you too. AOL is now requiring a special password just for Apple Mail app.

Not sure if you are still having a problems ... but I just fixed mine : )
Some older third-party email apps (that do not use our AOL-branded sign in page) require you to enter a single password for login credentials. If you've activated 2-step verificationfor your AOL account, you'll need to generate and use an "app password" to access AOL Mail from these apps.
1. Sign in and go to the AOL Account security page.
2. Click Generate app password or Manage app passwords.
3. Select your app from the drop down menu and click Generate.
4. Follow the instructions below the password.
- Be sure to enter the password into your app without any spaces.
5. Click Done.
6. Use this app password and your email address to sign in to your email app.
Remove an app password - Click Manage app passwords and then click the Delete icon to stop using an app password.
Thank you so much! I have been so frustrated for the past week trying to figure why I could get gmail but not aol. I know it's outdated mail app, but I still use it for some things. You are a life saver!
Enter SMTP server - smtp.aol.com or smtp.aim.com

When I send an email on my I pad using AOL, it goes directly to OUTBOX in AOL mail
