GarageBand: could not complete update

I'm trying to get GarageBand to update before installing Big Sur but am getting this error:

  • GarageBand can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because macOS version 11 or later is required.

I'm currently running Catalina. Any idea what's causing this?

Why would the app store then, show that I need a new Garageband update if my laptop is not capable of installing Big Sur? It is old enough where Big Sur won't install but the Garageband update is still showing that I need it but I can't install it. It is a little bit annoying to have that red notification circle all the time from now on forever if I can't install it.
