Concerning storage on icloud.. Does this mean after every month payment must be done cant you just purchase storage once????

This is what I'm trying to mean : you purchase for 200gb and can upgrade it whenever you want maybe if its after the storage is full, because maybe i may not completely fill 200gb by a month... Is there such an option??
iCloud Storage is a subscription service, you pay for it every month as long as you want to use it.
You can go for the 50GB subscription first then upgrade to 200GB when needed.
You pay every month independent of the amount used.
I would wish to directly upgrade to 200gb....
A question, when you cancel the monthly payment will the subscription still remain or would it automatically switch itself to the free 5gb?
Cant i just pay once or this means after every month payments must be made
