If you sync message with iCloud you don't.

To know, go to Settings > Your Name, Apple ID, iCloud, iTunes & App Store

Tap iCloud

Are messages turned on?

If they are, iCloud is NOT an archive, it is a syncing service and when you delete a message on your phone, it deletes from iCloud at the same time.
