erased hard drive no internet connection

I erased my hard drive so that I can give away my iMac. Now, I can't reinstall the OS because when I enter Recovery Mode and try to download the OS from the cloud, I have no internet connection.

I can't establish a connection because there are no WiFi icons at the top of the screen (there are no icons of any sort). And because the hard drive was erased, it only starts up in Recovery Mode.

How can I create an internet connection so I can download the OS? Will connecting directly with an ethernet cable work?

Yes, used a wired Ethernet connection. Wi-Fi should not be used for downloading operating system software. The files are too big and corruption often occurs. Then the download either won't install, or if it does, there are problems.
