doesn't support update

My iPhone doesn't have enough free storage to update ios, so I want to do it (and backup) through iTunes. However, iTunes on my MacBook Pro (2012) isn't finding/recognizing my iPhone. I reinstalled iTunes, but it says I need to upgrade my mac OS. I'm reluctant to do that, since this older Mac probably won't support the newer OS. Is there another way to get iTunes to find my phone? Or should I go ahead and attempt an OS upgrade? I'm kind of stuck, otherwise - can't update my phone with wifi OR with iTunes!

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.12

Can you provide a screenshot of the advisory which states " it says I need to upgrade my mac OS?"

I don't think it is actually asking you to upgrade your macOS. It may only be asking for you to update your iTunes software to access your iPhone.

mid 2012 is quite capable of running the newset macOS up to Catalina. No further.

An old rotational drive is not ideal however:

Catalina macOS 10.15.7

System requirements macOS 10.15 Catalina

macOS Catalina will run on all Macintosh computers that supported Mojave:

MacBook: Early 2015 or newer

MacBook Air: Mid 2012 or newer

MacBook Pro: Mid 2012 or newer

Mac Mini: Late 2012 or newer

iMac: Late 2012 or newer

iMac Pro

Mac Pro: Late 2013 or newer; Mid 2010 or Mid 2012 if upgraded with a recommended Metal-capable GPU

Thanks! I really though it meant that the OS had to be updated (which it keeps prompting me to do). I didn't want to do that - even if it's technically possible - because I think many of my applications would not work properly.

I went ahead and allowed the required update, updated my iPhone ios, and all is now good.

They could make that clearer.
