Use this Adapter: USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter - Apple

With this Adapter: You can connect your External Hard Drive using the female USB-A port for the Drive. With the female USB-C port in the adapter, you will still be able to charge your Mac. So, as a result, you will lose no ports.

I use it and it works excellently and as intended.
