OS Big Sur does not recognize my HP printer network

I have a HP Officejet J4680 all in one printer that has a ad hoc network called hpsetup. My MacBook Air has always shown it under my networks when I click on the wifi icon. I can then connect and print wireless. When I upgraded to Big Sur the network hpsetup no longer shows. The network (hpsetup) does show on my iPhone and iPad so I know it's a live network. It is not air print compatible so I cannot print from those devices. Why does my MacBook Air (using OS Big Sur) no longer recognize hpsetup and how do I fix it?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.12

Open >System Preferences>Software Update (Command R will reload and do a fresh check)

Update: HP Printer Software 5.1 should now be becoming available through Software Update to fix this issue.

(2220 UTC 23 October 2020)

or Apple direct download:

https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US

If you have continued issue:

The solution is to download this package which will update drivers AND THE CERTIFICATE:

ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-printer-essentials-S-5_14_8_4.pkg

download link above at the ftp address

If you still have an issue, delete the existing printer in

> System Preferences> Printers & Scanners, and add it again.

Connect an AirPrint printer to a Wi-Fi network - Apple Support.

you can also try reset print system if necessary:

I tried the Apple direct download and when I tried to install it I got the following message - This volume does not meet the requirements for this update. My question remains why does my iPhone and iPad recognize the hpsetup and my MacBook Air doesn't. I can print via the USB printer cable but the hpsetup network does not show under other networks. why does the computer not recognize the network hpsetup?
