you might have 'Removed' the app.
from your Home Screen, swipe left until you get to the App Library.
Swipe downward and you'll get an alphabetical list of your apps. Scroll to Messages or type it in the search field.
Once located, tap/hold and it'll 'lift' a bit, then you can drag it, it'll pop back out to your Home Screen.
