Cannot update my Mac OS from Mavericks to any other newer version of OS.

How to update my Mac OS from Mavericks? I think I missed one important update years ago. Now the Mac OS Big Sur installation won't work for me.
I have a MacBook Air 6,2 (earlier 2014), I have tried downloading the update combos from https://support.apple.com/downloads/macos. I downloaded them, I ran them, but it doesn't restart or anything, nor does it change the version of OS X in the "About this Mac". It is still 10.9.5. I have 390Gb free on the disk.
I don't even know which newer OS to install. In my "Software Udpdate" there is nothing compatible to update since years ago.

Thank you very much!

Choose Applications from the Finder's Go menu and open the installer from there. If there aren't any, download El Capitan, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur through the links provided.
