Apple Pencil use in Notes

I use Notes to make typed “to do” lists and would like to use my Apple Pencil to cross out completed tasks. I can use it if my notes are handwritten, but not to just make a check mark it cross out a typed line item. What am I doing wrong? My pencil is charged and works fine in other applications.
