If you are near the mains leave it plugged in, if you need portability then run on the battery. Following after that general rule use as you see fit.

I reccomend that you try to avoid letting your Mac reach 0% battery. I decide to charge it whenever I am not using it during the day. Leaving it charging all the time might affect the battery health a bit.
Leave the computer plugged in when convenient to do so. Leaving it plugged in will not damage your computer or your battery.
Avoid letting it discharge completely, if possible.
