I have several documents ( files and photos) that I saved to my iMAC desktop for easy retrieval. I no longer need them close at hand but want to save them. I have a cluttered desktop and want to clean it up. What is there process ?

you can create a new file or files in your home folder in finder and then move the desktop documents to the appropriate one.
edit "new file or files" to "new folder or folders"
Can I also do it the "long away" by opening the file and moving it to a folder on the hard drive or iCloud ?
yes, you can.
you can also put it in a folder in one of your existing finder folders, or even move it to an external HDD.
